7/29/06 - 8/05/06

Dr. Rick Stouffer, Gloria Mendosa, R.N., Mark Stouffer, pre-med student Jason Chancer, and Bernita Sheets served at Loma de Luz Hospital from July 29 – August 5. Again, luggage was loaded with medicines and clothing for the people in this isolated but beautiful area overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Loma de Luz, “The Hill of Light”, has a busy outpatient clinic and a 50 bed hospital with 24 hour emergency care. Providing relief and encouragement to the doctors who see over 900 patients every month is why PAPA exists.

06/17/06 - 07/21/06

PAPA sent two teams to Karanda Mission Hospital, a two hour drive from Harare. The station has a 150 bed hospital, an outpatient clinic, and a nursing school.

(06/17/06 - 07/08/06) The first team included  Dr. Nathan Valentine, Dr. Preethi Krishnan, Dr. Bryan Davis, pre-med student Tyler George, and Bernita and Shelley Sheets. Each member used virtually all of their luggage allowance to bring meds, clothing, and a new computer for the people of Karanda. Bernita actually packed the computer in her carry-on “purse” and Tyler packed the monitor in his carry-on. One “highlight” of the trip was the three days without electricity at the hospital, including performing one C-section using flashlights. Besides many hours in the operating room and on the wards, work was done to remodel the Men’s Ward.

(07/01/06 - 07/21/06) The second team included Dr. Larry Anderson, Dr. Scott Stringfield, Dr. Kyle Sheets, nursing school student Sarah Sheets, med school student David Rodriquez, Ben Sheets, and Eric Stringfield. Also on the team were Ron Steele and David George, who both work for AT&T. They donated a computer and set up a network in preparation for a new telephone system they are providing in 2007. Drs. Valentine and Krishnan remained on the station with the second team when the other members from their team returned home.
